ESSAY: Gold Arriving at a New Level of its Bull Market.

By Dirk Masuch Oesterreich

First published on www.safehaven.com on January 04, 2006

(This essay may be a bit out of date. However, the fundamental divers of the gold price outlined in this article are still in place today, or maybe even more so than when this piece was written over a year ago)

Only a few short days ago the prevailing consensus among gold investors was that gold is in a correction that had some way to go to work off the seemingly overblown $540 level it reached in December. Gold could have retreated all the way down to its lower trend channel line to around $450 - $460 followed by a considerable consolidation without violating the bullish case. While this is what would have to be expected if gold were still to trade within its stage one dynamics, the recent fireworks in the precious metals sector, however, suggest otherwise.

It appears to make sense to assume that gold broke out of an already ascending trend channel and may now be looking to establish new support at or above the old resistance line. In the 1-year chart gold broke out of its consolidation pattern in the early days of September. Since then it has been forming a new uptrend channel that itself was broken to the upside rather quickly.

Although at this point it may be too soon to know it seems that gold is making an attempt at a parabolic rise. This may imply that a pullback could come to a halt just above the $500 level, turning a former resistance line into new support. The astonishing thing is the short time frame in which all this is happening. All the recent action in the precious metals sector indicates a change in trading dynamics. This is no longer gold's stage one trading pattern. An acceleration of the uptrend is a technical factor to be expected at the beginning of stage two.

For gold to enter stage two of its bull market a few fundamental factors have to fall in line. So far the gold bull was often referred to as a phenomenon of the dollar bear. This is no longer the case. In the last months gold broke out worldwide to the upside in every major currency. The level most closely watched by global investors probably was the 350 Euro level which posed a strong resistance for years. The break of €350 may very well have been the event that spawned international investment demand for gold. Consequently, gold broke free from its inverse relation to the US dollar.

There are other important factors that distinguish gold's recent price action from its former trading dynamics. In the last years there was always a certain level of price support by physical demand from Asia that sort of put a floor under the more speculative trading in New York's market. However, this new gold behavior is now being driven predominantly by the Eastern markets which means that the demand for physical gold became much stronger. This physical demand has even spilled over to the COMEX where an increasing number of gold investors now demand delivery.

These are certainly events that we have not seen during the first stage of gold's bull market. It seems like investors are quickly recognizing the importance of a safe haven investment like gold. A similar case, of course, could be made for silver. After a long consolidation silver's technicals also seem to catch up with its bullish fundamentals at last.

After tuesday's trading gold seems to be approaching overbought levels short term. Similarly, some of the important HUI components like Newmont Mining, Agnico Eagles Mines, or Glamis Gold, to name a few, also seem to be at or in overbought territory so that a healthy pullback is to be expected. On the other hand, what does "overbought" mean these days?

For the time being I guess it is safe to say that gold is now trading within the next stage of its bull market. However, it should not be forgotten that $ 500 gold marks a resistance level that goes back to 1988 and 1983. So far it was taken out easily. Should the expected pullback indeed be stopped at the new support line of around $500 - $505, I, for one, would take this as a technical confirmation that gold has firmly arrived in the investment driven stage two of its bull market.

Executive summary

My most comprehensive map of stock exchange listed precious and base metal mining companies in Nevada is described below.

The following text is an abstract submitted to a poster competition at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of Nevada in Reno in February 2007 where this map was on display.

The map presents a compilation of publicly traded precious and base metal mining companies that are at present actively producing, developing, or exploring for mineral deposits in Nevada. The map highlights the location of land properties and major commodities produced in the context of known mineral trends. Companies active in specific mining districts are shown in a series of accompanying maps.

The map is backed by a database that combines GIS data from the Nevada Bureau of Mines and elevation data from the US Geological Survey with company specific financial data taken from the websites of the respective mining companies or from the System for Electronic Document Analysis and Retrieval (SEDAR), a filing system developed for the Canadian Securities Administrators.

The GIS database contains attributes defining the name of the deposit, the name of the mine, the name of the company owning the property, major and minor commodities produced or explored for, reserves and resources (when available), host rock geology, deposit and mine type, and coordinates of the location of the mines/properties. Approximately 130 properties or exploration targets have been added to the NBMG's database so far by researching company websites. Complementing attributes to the database comprise the stock symbols of the companies and the exchange they trade on, a classification of companies into producers, developers and explorers, 52-week price ranges, market capitalization, number of shares and warrants outstanding and their expiration dates (when available), names of management/directors, properties within Nevada and outside (political risk), and hyperlinks to the company websites as well as to charts of the 3-month and 2-year price ranges on stockcharts.com.

The Map of Precious and Base Metal Mining Companies in Nevada is part of a series of maps that were derived from the updated GIS database. Additional maps highlight the sites of historic and abandoned mines, the sites of major gold mines in Nevada, and mining companies classified by market capitalization and predominant activity (explorer, developer, producer).

Map projection is in UTM 11 / NAD27. Horizontal and vertical units are in meters. Map scale is 1:800,000. The size of the map is 42" x 50". All information is projected over a color relieve map that has a 50 m resolution which makes the maps easy to read and visually attractive. The map is suitable for board meetings and for display in conference rooms.

Background

All this began as a private project.

As a geologist and private investor I identified Nevada and its numerous gold and silver mining companies as investment opportunities with great potential. Nevada has the biggest output of gold in the US, a mining friendly administration, a skilled workforce of highly capable geologists and mining engineers, existing mining infrastructure, and the right geology.

To identify promising junior mining and exploration companies for investment purposes, location of their properties is an important factor. Are they exploring within known mineralization trends or close to existing mines? Where are the most productive gold mines and mining districts? What about access to their properties?

The answers to these kinds of questions are typically found by means of GIS technology. By getting relevant data about past and present producers, explorers, and old and new mines into a Geographic Information System and combining them with topographic features, it should be possible to identify the most promising companies.

Financial data about the respective companies and their stocks would be a key in the search for the best investments and had to be integrated into the graphical database. The result is a unique GIS database that allows for efficient queries on Nevada’s stock exchange listed mining companies.

The project took on a life of its own and evolved into a professional product that focuses on practical use for investment purposes. The maps and database described on this site are directed to mining companies with interests in Nevada, as well as individual and institutional investors.
